Where most of the destinations in the Angkor area were built as monuments, Angkor Thom was a city established in the late 12th century by king Jayavarman VII. At the citys center is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon.
Angkor Thoms walls are 8 m (26 ft) high and flanked by a moat. The walls each 3 km (1.8mi) long, enclosing an area of 9 km² (3.5 mi²).
Within the city was a system of canals, through which water flowed from the northeast to the southwest. The bulk of the land enclosed by the walls would have been occupied by the secular buildings of the city, of which nothing remains. This area is now covered by forest. It is said that at one point the citys population exceeded 1 million people.
